Modern-Day Marco Polo: Apprenticeship in Traditional Chinese Crafts
Nantong: A Journey into Blue Calico Art
2024 marks the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo’s passing. In this year, Alessandro Martini, a young man from Milan, Italy, performed in the dance theatre Invisible Cities, portraying his idol Marco Polo.
His Chinese friends affectionately call him Alex. Alex has longed for coming to China ever since he heard about Marco Polo’s story in elementary school. He started to learn Chinese in high school. Several years later, he finally came to this fascinating Eastern country and stayed for eight years.
Over the past eight years, Alex has travelled to most parts of China and thrilled to discover that the mysterious Chinese intangible cultural heritage is a collection of Chinese wisdom and techniques that can be touched and learnt. So, as the modern-day “Marco Polo”, he will visit some uniquely charming cities to learn traditional Chinese crafts and explore local youth-run shops and museums from young inheritors of intangible cultural heritage, thus sharing these fascinating Eastern techniques with everyone.
Alex travelled to Nantong, in Jiangsu province intending to learn the renowned Blue Calico dyeing technique. The beautiful city, Nantong, was once recorded in The Travels of Marco Polo. The raw materials used in making blue calico, such as cotton and “Lan” grass (the Polygonum tinctorium Ait which can be used to dye the cloth indigo), are sourced from nature. The blue and white color scheme imitates nature, reflecting the Chinese respectful utilization of the natural world. The Chinese philosophy of harmony between humanity and nature is thus vividly practiced.

Narrator: I am Alessandro Martini from Milan, Italy. My Chinese friends affectionately call me Alex. This year marks the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo’s passing. Now, as the modern-day “Marco Polo”, I will visit five uniquely charming cities in China and learn traditional Chinese crafts from young inheritors of intangible cultural heritage.

Narrator: The beautiful Nantong city in Jiangsu province was once recorded in The Travels of Marco Polo. It is renowned for its Blue Calico. The blue and white patterns on fabric, with their serene charm nestled within the gentle ripples of the Jiangnan water towns, have been refined through over 800 years of history. This traditional dyeing technique continues to shine with unique appeal in the modern era.
Alessandro Martin:Right now I am here at Nantong Blue Calico Museum. Let’s go inside and find out what’s cool about it. This is fish. Do you know that in Chinese culture, fish represents a good year of fortune and prosperity.
Narrator: For a long time, blue calico has played an indispensable role in people’s lives. As time goes by, it has gradually become an expression of cultural confidence for the Chinese nation, bearing witness to the craftsmen’s perseverance and dedication. Today, I have invited the sixth-generation inheritor of blue calico to share with us the stories behind this craft.
Alessandro Martinie:But before meeting her, let me change my clothes! Wow finally, I changed my clothes. How do I look? Good enough to meet our expert? Let’s go and ask her. Master Wu, right?
Wu Lingshu (Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritor of Blue Calico):Nice to meet you,Alex.
Alessandro Martinie:I’m so happy to meet you. I’ve heard your intangible heritage skills are amazing.
Wu Lingshu (Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritor of Blue Calico): Let me introduce you to the history of our blue calico. Blue calico, also known as “herb pattern cloth” in ancient times, originated in the Southern Song Dynasty. It has a history of over 800 years.
Narrator: Blue calico silently outlines the myriad forms of time. Through Master Wu’s explanation, I gradually grasped the history, inheritance, and innovation of the blue calico dyeing techniques.
Alessandro Martinie:I think I understand why the blue calico- this Chinese cultural heritage has been inherited until now. It is because it has to deal with our everyday life.
Wu Lingshu (Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritor of Blue Calico): Look at the patterns. We have added some new and innovative designs, (Oh like these! ) such as these geometric shapes which are young people’s favourite.
Narrator: Italian patterns are simple and straightforward, seeking freedom in bright lines. Chinese patterns are delicate and profound, celebrating time with fluid strokes. I witnessed the beauty of patterns from both countries, radiating the brilliant splendor of “harmony in diversity”.
Wu Lingshu (Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritor of Blue Calico): Later, you can choose a pattern yourself. Here are the twelve zodiac animals.
Alessandro Martinie: Since I was born in the Year of the Rat, I choose the rat.
Wu Lingshu (Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritor of Blue Calico): Let’s start carving then.
Alessandro Martinie: OK.
Narrator: Carving is an extremely complex task. Although it may look simple, each stroke requires precise control of force and angle when using tools like the carving knife and punch.
Alessandro Martinie: Wow, I carved out the rat’s ear!
Alessandro Martinie: At first I thought this was very complicated. But after learning with the teacher, I feel like this is pretty easy.
Wu Lingshu (Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritor of Blue Calico): This board can now be used for applying the paste.
Narrator: The paste is a mixture of soybean flour, while the dye comes from indigo plants. The blue calico embodies the craftsmen’s wisdom in observation and creation in their daily lives.
Wu Lingshu (Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritor of Blue Calico): By controlling the dyeing time, we can achieve different shades of colour.
Alessandro Martinie: I am looking forward to it!
Wu Lingshu (Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritor of Blue Calico): Do you prefer dark blue or light blue?
Alessandro Martinie: I like the effect of varying shades, from light to dark or dark to light.
Wu Lingshu (Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritor of Blue Calico): Just immerse it and soak it.
Narrator: Time drives craftsmen to innovate. Through precise control of dye concentration and soaking time, Wu Lingshu has enabled Blue Calico to present various innovative blues shades, such as light blue, medium blue, deep blue, and dark blue.
Alessandro Martinie: Okay guys, so we just finished this first part. As you can see this napkin already became blue. Chinese cultural heritage is amazing. I wouldn’t even believe this was made by me.
Narrator: The birth of a piece of blue calico requires a series of complex processed including carving, scraping paste, dyeing and paste removal. This reflects over 800 years of cultural inheritance and the wisdom of countless skilled craftsmen.
Alessandro Martinie: oday at Nantong Blue Calico Museum we have witnessed with our own eyes how the Chinese cultural heritage has become closer to young people lives. So welcome you guys to come and see it by yourselves! Next, we will head to Dehua to explore the beautiful craftsmanship hidden behind porcelain. Let’s go.

The “Chinese White” Dehua Porcelain has always been popular in Europe, renowned for its quality and dazzling whiteness. It represents the respect for people of virtue and the admiration for the beauty of nature. Using porcelain as a medium, it unveils Chinese stories through porcelain, embodying a philosophy of harmony and cooperation.

Alessandro Martinie: Hello guys, can you guess where I am right now? Can you see the three Chinese characters above my head? “Taocijie”– it means the street of ceramics. Today I am here in Dehua, Fujian province, the city well known as the international capital of ceramics. In the 13th century, Marco Polo visited this town during his travel to the east. To let you know more about that, today we are going to Dehua Ceramics Museum. Let’s go!
Alessandro Martinie: Hello, Curator?
Zheng Jiongxin(Curator of Dehua Ceramics Museum): Hello, welcome!
Alessandro Martinie: I’m Alex.
Zheng Jiongxin(Curator of Dehua Ceramics Museum): Welcome to the Dehua Ceramics Museum.
Alessandro Martinie: It's so beautiful here! I really want to learn more about the history.
Narrator: At the museum, I learned how pottery, dating back over 20,000 years from the Neolithic period, evolved today into the world-known Dehua White Porcelain. It’s a wonder that from the soil of agrarian heritage, the wisdom of craftsmen breathes life into porcelain. Dehua Porcelain is also known as “China White”. Through each piece, it reveals the unique romance and oriental beauty of Chinese. Porcelain is no longer just a lifeless object; as the saying goes, “Silent, yet with a soul”, I believe the soul of the porcelain lies in the devoted spirit of its artisans.
Narrator:Apprenticed under Master Qiu Shuangjiong, Qiu Yuzhen has been engaging in porcelain carving for a decade and represents the younger generation of intangible cultural heritage inheritors. Her porcelain works, whether as white as jade or as thin as a cicada’s wing represent a perfect blend of tradition and modern artistry.
Alessandro Martinie: Can I try this too? I think maybe I can do it. Could you please teach me?
Qiu Yuzhen(National Skilled Craftsman): Sure, let’s give it a shot!
Narratorr: Porcelain sculpture is a key part of Dehua Porcelain’s craftsmanship requiring unwavering focus and precision. Even the most skilled artisans might spend hours working on a single piece.
Alessandro Martinie: I feel like I understand now. With the power of art and sculpture, the earth becomes alive.
Narrator: With practiced ease, Master Qiu proceeded to the next steps of assembly and porcelain painting. In a while, a lifelike porcelain doll jumped before my eyes. The process, however, is far from complete. To become a breathtaking masterpiece, the clay sculpture must endure kiln firing at 1200C for over 12 hours. More than a thousand years ago, wise artisans were already employing this craft to make Dehua Porcelain renowned worldwide. Today, the Taiping Kiln, with its 1,044-year history, still burns brightly. The artisans continue to follow ancient firing traditions, imbuing modern pieces with fresh life. This cultural inheritance has propelled Dehua Porcelain to get known by the whole world. Youth-run shops can be found everywhere nowadays, showcasing the fresh artistry of young heritage inheritors across generations, while reflecting people's cultural confidence and reverence for artistic treasures.
Narrator:Dehua Porcelain, now with a renewed appearance, introduces the cultural charm of this intangible heritage to a wider spectrum of audience. Bearing the wisdom of China, it will also convey Chinese stories with a fresh perspective rooted in Chinese aesthetics on the modern global stage. Next, we’re heading to Dongyang, Zhejiang, to uncover the Chinese wisdom hidden within ancient lanterns. Let’s go!

While in China, they think of lanterns. Lanterns carry the life philosophy and aesthetic tastes of the ancient Chinese people, representing their yearning for a better life full of humanity. The lanterns are a tangible expression of the Chinese positive and healthy mindset.

Alessandro Martinie: If I say fire, what comes to your mind?

Passerby: I think of “Zuan Mu Qu Huo” (making fire by rubbing sticks).

Alessandro Martinie: IZuan Mu Qu Huo? What does that mean?
Passerby: Hotpot.
Passerby: Sun.
Passerby: Lanterns.
Alessandro Martinie: Their answers were pretty fun right? One of the girls I interviewed even mentioned lantern. Today, I’m here in Zhejiang Dongyang, to show you how the element of fire is used in Chinese cultural heritage. Let’s go. Today,I have seen so many beautiful lanterns! I am really impressed by the art of ancient China. Today, in order to know more about this culture, I have invited a cultural heritage expert. Let’s go and meet him.
Alessandro Martinie: Hello, are you Master Zuo, the inheritor of this intangible cultural heritage? Hi, I’m Alex. It’s a pleasure to meet you. I really love your lanterns. Could you take me to learn more about them?
Zuo Yanling(Inheritor of the Jinhua Lantern-Making Craft, Intangible Cultural Heritage): Sure, no problem!
Alessandro Martinie: Let’s go then!
Narrator: Master Zuo says that lanterns are the everlasting fire of civilization in China, lighting the path forward. They are cultural treasures that continue to shine brightly throughout history.
Alessandro Martinie: This looks like a book.
Zuo Yanling(Inheritor of the Jinhua Lantern-Making Craft, Intangible Cultural Heritage): It is. It covers the Four Arts of the Chinese Scholar: Music, Chess, Calligraphy and Painting. See, at the very top is a chessboard. Our lanterns are usually hung at the front door. When someone walks by at night, it can light the way for them.
Alessandro Martinie: I’ve heard that the Chinese are really good with fire! Even gunpowder was invented by Chinese.
Zuo Yanling(Inheritor of the Jinhua Lantern-Making Craft, Intangible Cultural Heritage): Yes, that’s true! The wisdom behind fire is also used in these lanterns. In the past when there was no electricity, we used candles for lighting, and the lantern is set to prevent the candle inside from being blown out. The larger the lantern, the wider the area it lights up, and the more places it can illuminate.
Alessandro Martinie: I see right now inside this lantern, they used fire to enlighten the environment in such a beautiful way. I can’t wait to try it out myself now!
Zuo Yanling(Inheritor of the Jinhua Lantern-Making Craft, Intangible Cultural Heritage): The bamboo that grows by the water has particularly long joints. There are no joints in the middle of the bamboo strips lantern.
Narrator: With the wisdom of craftsmen, even a tough material like bamboo can be transformed into delicate bamboo strips. Then, under Master Zuo’s skilled hands, these strips are woven into a lantern frame. This seemingly simple step is actually quite complex. Even for an expert like Master Zuo, it takes three hours to complete this work.To craft a lantern involves many more steps.
Zuo Yanling(Inheritor of the Jinhua Lantern-Making Craft, Intangible Cultural Heritage): After soaking for a whole night, the lantern material becomes soft, and we can start to shape it.
Narrator: Today, electric lights have replaced candles as the primary source of illumination. Modern lanterns have taken on a new mission behind the scenes – becoming an essential cultural expression during festivals and celebrations.

Zuo Yanling(Inheritor of the Jinhua Lantern-Making Craft, Intangible Cultural Heritage): Now that the lantern is glued together, we can select some patterns or words to stick onto it.
Alessandro Martinie: There’s an old saying in China, “Fortune, wealth, and good luck come together. “So, I think the character "Fu" (meaning good fortune) would be a good choice.
Zuo Yanling(Inheritor of the Jinhua Lantern-Making Craft, Intangible Cultural Heritage): The bamboo lantern is done.
Narrator:Regardless of the forms of art, Chinese people’s yearning for a beautiful life is everlasting. This yearning reflects their love for life. The fire inside the lantern gives people hope, making each ordinary yet precious day shine with brilliance.
Narrator: The fire inside this lantern reflects the wisdom of Chinese artisans shining brightly all along the way. The experts of the Chinese cultural heritage are still working hard. With the help of the new generation, Dongyang’s lantern is still evolving to become more and more attractive right now. I’m really craving to know what are the other surprises in Dongyang.

From "outdated, rundown and small" hamlet to modern community: an international student reveals the "gorgeous transformation" of Chongqing Minzhu Village
Luis Alfredo, a Mexican international student from China University of Petroleum (East China), was drawn to a vibrant community canteen nestled in the lively Chongqing Minzhu Village, a place renowned as the ‘Top Chinese Buffet’.
In the bustling community canteen, the expansive 500-square-metre hall buzzes with life, filled to the brim with eager patrons. Here, for 18 yuan, you can choose from 20 dishes. And all of this is just a small aspect of the changes in Minzhu village.
In a time long past, there lay Minzhu village, a place marked by its crumbling structures and weary amenities. After a series of well-designed renovation, Minzhu village blossomed into a lively and modern community.
The miraculous transformation didn’t take place overnight. The relevant departments of the Minzhu village have had in-depth communication with more than 400 residents to ensure that the renovation plan truly meets public needs. With community hospital being updated, the Craftsman Workshop preserved and the once-narrow staircase widened, every alteration resonated with the needs of the community.
Its transformation is a microcosm of the democratic practices in many communities across China. If you're also interested in Minzhu Village, why not take a stroll and experience its unique charm for yourself?

Hello, My name is Luis Alfredo
I come from Mexico
I just returned from watching the Olympic Games
After coming back from Paris
the Community Canteen in Chongqing's minzhu village
Why is it considered the top?
As you can see, the 500-square-meter hall is actually full here
For 18 yuan, you can choose from 20 dishes
And local elderly people and those working nearby dine here
Such a trendy canteen is located in Chongqing's Minzhu Village
Can you imagine?
This village was once considered outdated, rundown, and small
However, after a series of renovations
it has now become a vibrant modern community
After such a huge transformation
how exactly was Minzhu Village renovated
Previously, this area was like a shantytown, especially the drainage ditch
People call it, the sewer
Even the community hospital next to it was dubbed the sewer hospital
To address these issues
the Jiulongpo District authorities consulted over 400 residents
The residents' opinions were adopted
The authority repaired the drainage ditch and preserved 164 large trees in the area
The sewer hospital has also become the current community health service center
where nearby residents can get their medical treatment without leaving their community
The community health service center now has more departments
Previously, we had only 5 departments
but now we have expanded to 10 departments
The houses here were too old
If they had been redeveloped from scratch, it would have cost 10 billion
Later, Minzhu Village followed the principle of “preserve, renovate, demolish and add,”
transforming from an old community into a modern new one
In the end, it only cost just over 300 milliom yuan
Although the grassroots government serves to the transformation of Minzhu Village
It is not entirely up to them
In this community, large projects and small ones are all decided by the residents themselves
Taking the Building 5 of Minzhu Village 2 as an example
There used to be two very small staircases here which were very inconvenient for the residents to get around
After discussions, it was upgraded to a wide staircase
After the houses were renovated, the elderly still wanted to retain their past lifestyle habits
Consequently, the Community Craftsman Workshop emerged
consolidating familiar vendors like appliance repair, barbershops, and locksmith services continuing to serve everyone
Although it's a new market, having familiar faces means life is still as convenient as before
I continue to visit the job and entrepreneurship zone here
where there are many trendy small shops opened by young people
The coffee shop is owned by a 30-year-old girl
who told me that the renovated Minzhu Village has attracted many tourists
The shop's highest monthly sales are more than 60,000 yuan
In addition to running their stores, they will also come to the community's decision-making session
Everyone can put forward their own views
Okay, that's for today's exploration trip, guys
If you are interested in Minzhu Village
you can come for a walk and experience the unique charm of this place

Finding the "spiritual hometown" in Kashgar, Swedish student saw the real Xinjiang
"If you ask me, 'what is happiness'? I would say, 'come to Xinjiang, Xinjiang will give you the answer'! Because at this moment, my sense of happiness in life is skyrocketing!"
Elliot Frennstedt, a Swedish international student from Renmin University of China, has only visited Xinjiang once and regards Xinjiang as a "spiritual hometown".
Here, people live and work in peace and contentment, enjoying their life; The diverse culture here is also evident everywhere. People are preserving and innovating on their ethnic treasures in their own ways.
On the streets of the old town of Kashgar, you can joyfully sing, dance, and have fun with locals dressed in different ethnic costumes. People of different ethnicities and customs live together here, learning from each other and enjoying their life.
Whether it's running a guesthouse or selling handicrafts, more and more residents are opening shops and starting businesses. Their lives have greatly improved, and the culture has been well preserved.
"Seeing is truly believing. It was only after coming here that I personally felt how the people of Xinjiang live and work in peace and contentment." Said Elliot Frennstedt.

大家好
Hello everyone
I am Elliot Frennstedt, an international student from Sweden
After a year in China
I am finally here in Xinjiang
the place I have always wanted to visit
If I hadn't come here myself
I really couldn't imagine how vast Xinjiang is
From east to west
you would see snowy mountains, grasslands and desert oasis
On the oasis in southern Xinjiang
lies the highlight of my trip
喀什
Kashgar
Don't think that the famous ancient city of Kashgar is just a tourist spot
In fact, it is a vibrant old city
where tens of thousands of local residents
have been living for decades
In the ancient city, there is a century old tea house
which is an important place for locals to communicate and socialize
Now as an saying goes, when in Rome, do as Romans do
Let's go take a look
People from various ethnic groups come here to drink tea
For them, the point of drinking tea is to gather together
Xinjiang has always been a melting pot of multiple ethnic groups
including Uyghur, Han, Kazakh, and 13 other indigenous ethnic groups
Through long-term coexistence
they have absorbed the cultures of each other to varying degrees
becoming intertwined with each other
while still retaining their own unique lifestyles
This small shop is called Guli's Home
You can see here how to read in Uyghur script as well
and it is indeed the home of a Xinjiang girl named Guli
I heard this is a popular check-in spot
Let's go and take a look
Guli was the first local who renovated her home into a guesthouse in the old city Kashgar
She finds hats and instrument artisans
consign their work to her
She also cooks and dances to entertain guests
Now, Guli's Home is a famous chain
with three guest-houses already open in the old city
I hear that one of the most skilled craftsman of
making ethnic musical instruments in all of Xinjiang
has a shop right here in Kashgar
Let’s go meet the master
The owner told me that
he can make more than ten types of musical instruments
including instruments from various ethnic groups
In order to adapt to the rapidly growing tourism market
he made bold innovations
and manufactured instrument modes in different sizes
to suite the needs of tourists
steering the development of the tourist souvenir industry
while also raising the popularity
and influence of ethnic Uyghur handcraft
事实上
In fact
I found that small businesses like theirs are everywhere in the old city
Whether it's running a guesthouse or selling handicrafts
more and more residents are opening shops and starting businesses
Their lives have greatly improved
and the culture has been well preserved
It's indeed a win-win
In Uyghur language, there is a word called Bazaar
My Uyghur classmate told me
As long as you go to the bazaar
you don't have to worry about anything
So I'm very curious
what exactly is a bazaar?
Bazaar is a marketplace
Locals bring their home-produced livestock, fruits, and handmade products
to the bazaar for free trade
By opening small businesses and selling self-produced products
they can increase their economic income
Most towns have bazaars
and over time, bazaars have taken on the functions of
commodity exchange, information acquisition, and social interaction
During the day, there's a day market
and at night, there's a night market
The bazaar truly brings people together
Over the past decade
both Xinjiang’s GDP and the per capita disposable income of residents
have more than doubled
This visit gave me a whole new understanding of Xinjiang
It is a joyful place
Here people live and work in peace and contentment

Whether it's language, traditional crafts, or architectural styles
