　　比音而乐之

　　“比音而乐之”指的是将各种声音组合为曲调并将它表达出来。“比”，按一定的形式排比组合。“乐”在这里用作动词，用音乐表达出来。“乐”不只是指声音的排比组合，还包括与音乐相配的舞蹈。这一命题指人受到外界刺激，内心产生情感波动，从而自然发出各种“声”。自然状态发出的“声”是无变化的单一声响；如果“声”有高低、长短、疾徐的变化，就成为“音（乐音）”；把各种不同的“音”加以排比组合，以一定的形式连接起来，就成为曲调，这就是“乐（音乐）”。

　　Arrange Notes into a Piece of Music

　　Here, bi means to arrange and combine something in a certain way, and yue means to express through music. As a noun in its broad sense, yue refers to both the arrangement of sounds and the dance that accompanies the music. When a person experiences changes of feeling, triggered by external encounter, he will naturally make a variety of sounds. Simple and invariable, these sounds can be converted into tonic notes, or yin, because of their differences in pitch, length, and speed. These notes are thus arranged and combined into a piece of music, or yue in a certain way.
